How to Choose a Solid Wood Nightstand

A nightstand seems like a simple piece of furniture, but the difference between one that lasts a lifetime and one that wobbles apart in two years comes down to a few key details. Here's what to actually look for.

Check the material, not just the finish

Most budget nightstands are built from particleboard or MDF wrapped in a wood-look veneer. It photographs fine, but veneer chips, swells with humidity, and can't be repaired if it's damaged. Solid wood costs more up front, but it can be sanded, refinished, and repaired for decades. Look at the product description or ask directly: is this solid wood, or wood veneer over composite board?

Look at the joinery

How the drawers and frame are actually put together matters more than how the piece looks in a photo. Solid wood construction with proper joinery holds up to daily use, opening and closing drawers thousands of times over the years, without loosening.

Consider where the wood comes from

Locally sourced hardwood, like Canadian pine, typically means shorter supply chains, fresher material, and a smaller environmental footprint than furniture shipped overseas. It also usually means better quality control, since the maker is closer to the source.

Think about size before style

Measure your space first. A nightstand that's too tall relative to your mattress height, or too deep for a small bedroom, will bother you daily even if you love how it looks. Check the full dimensions, not just the width, before buying.

Ask about the finish

Non-toxic, water-based finishes are safer for bedrooms, where you spend roughly a third of your life, and are better for the environment than heavy lacquers and solvent-based stains.

At Plank & Gable, every nightstand we build is solid Canadian pine, hand-finished with a non-toxic tan wash, and made to be repaired rather than replaced. Browse our nightstands to see the difference for yourself.
